Can the laptops off of my broken laptop be retrieved?

My husband (who is now in jail) went into a fit of rage last night and broke my laptop in half (separated the screen from the keyboard). I have three weeks left of college and a lot of school files on the harddrive. Is there a way to retrieve those documents and who do I do so? Thank you
